Where you sleep in Ayutthaya matters less for its stars than for its position. The old capital sits on an island ringed by rivers, and almost everything worth seeing — the great temple ruins, the piers, the riverside restaurants — is on or beside it. Choose a base within reach of the island and your mornings begin at the temples and your afternoons on the water, with little time lost to transit. Choose badly and you spend the cool early hours in a taxi. Here is how the areas differ, and one stay we can vouch for.
Why position beats luxury here
The whole appeal of an overnight stay in Ayutthaya is timing — being at the temples when they open and on the water for golden hour — and timing is a function of distance, not thread count. A simple room ten minutes from the ruins will serve that plan far better than a resort half an hour out. Look for somewhere within walking or short-ride distance of the historical park and the river piers, quiet enough to sleep well after an early start. Everything else is a bonus.
The areas — and the stay we recommend
Broadly, you have three choices. On the island itself you are closest to the temples and can walk to many at dawn, though rooms are mostly small and independent. Across the river to the east, around the station, sits the bulk of budget guesthouses and easy transport.
